Initial Idea Outline

Synopsis: Starts from behind a closed door inside the house. We hear an argument between the boy and his parents, with the brother in the background (living room) eating. He comes out and goes to his room ,flooded with lighting, goes on his bed, with a long resentful expression on his face.

It's a new day, the parents aren't home, and the boy goes to the kitchen. He notices the brother and his friends outside on the balcony smoking.

The boy is in the shed. Music is being played from his phone. Right before he starts, he notices a spider, and starts pa



Characters: 15, still visibly a teenager .Believes he is a grown up and older than he actually is, and is eager to be more independent, yet is held back by what is , in his view, restrictive parenting. This has all translated into anger and resentment inside him. At the end of the film, he comes to the realisation that he is still just a child. He also admires to be like his older brother, who is essentially an exaggeration of his desires.

Narrative: Will loosely follow Todorov in that there is a disruption to the character's aspiration, which is then attempted to be dealt with, however, breaks conventions as restoration is traditionally getting rid of the spider, yet we see this new equilibrium where following the loss of the joint, he realises he is still a child. Will include a twist - the spider.
Mise-en-scene: Interior of house in North London. Balcony outdoor top floor. His room is dominantly red (neon lighting) with his brothers being blue. Costume design for the boy - bold outer layers (coat) with more muted colour, plain, typically teenage design inner layer (shirt).

Aesthetics: Shots of the boy will maintain noticeable distance so mostly medium shots, so we never properly align with his ideals, until the end of the film which will include close ups to show he has corrected his ideals. A pov shot from the top corner of the shed to foreshadow the spider's presence.

Sound: In terms of the spider, sound will be more leaning towards the naturalistic side of the spectrum rather than artifice (cartoon like), and will not be hyperreal to the extent that it evokes disgust from the spectator. I want the spectator to be completely immersed in the world of the film, for the boundary between diegesis and non-diegesis to be blurred, and so sound will be purely diegetic, no soundtrack, with some occasional diegetic music, e.g. the brother and his friends have a song on in the background that the brother emulates. The initial argument will be muffled, but not to an incomprehensible extent.

Brief: Twist - the spider is unexpected. Conflict between two character - it is about the boy trying to get rid of the spider. Development of one character - he learns something about himself, that he is still a child.
